Interview with Viktor Laurentis via sms
Viktor: First thing, the title «EDIT»?
Mumtazz: Yes from editing, assemblage, it’s a beautiful word, «EDIT», also because of my friend Edith.
V: It’s always personal?
M: Also, at least it as been like that until now.
V: What is so special about collage?
What makes you go back to this technique over and over again?
M: Cinema. A film in a frame, a film made of films.
V: And you are the editor?
M: Yes and no. Collage is a good medium to experience the magic happening.
V: You mean the expression of sub-consciousness?
M: If you want, or the over-consciousness, when we switch from the role of makers and seat in the throne of contemplation.
V: Ohh it sounds pompous…
M: It does, with plumes and all, but this «unpeel» can happen while washing the dishes, walking the dog or writing a bad cheque.
V: So why making collage?
M: There are catalyser activities. All the things we did before school, dancing, painting, singing… oh, and writing.
V: For me the collages are visual poems.
M: Well the process of making them is very similar to poetry.
The way the images produce another reading, another meaning...
Sometimes there is a key that finds its door and there is a click, a «take-off» happens, an ahhh.
V: Because of that, collage was such a dear medium to the surrealists.
M: And for anyone who wants to find something beyond the rational.
V: How do you process your selections in this ocean of images?
M: Ah all the ways, by the visual quality, by the contents, by the colours, everything. And then there is the pleasure of association, that photographer, this model, those people, those objects, those places and moments.
It’s an act of Surfing in a past material that was not done yet.
