Catarina Real (1992, Barcelos), works at the intersection between artistic practice and theoretical research in the expanded fields of painting, writing and choreography, mostly in long-term collaborative projects that address the question of how we can live better collectively. She is a doctoral student at the Centre for Humanistic Studies at the University of Minho with research that crosses art, love and capital. She maintains a practice of commenting – in the form of reflective texts, introductory texts to exhibitions, interviews and moderating conversations – on the works and processes carried out by artists in her generational group, with the intention of contributing to a healthy environment of criticism and collective and community creation. She has been vice-president of the French association Artistes en Résidence since 2019 and editor at Editions de la Ruine since 2022.
She has presented her work publicly in various institutions, such as the Teatro Municipal do Campo Alegre, a Galeria Municipal do Porto, o Museu Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, among others; in independent spaces, such as Rua do Sol, Campanice, Graciosa, Laboratório das Artes, Sol Pele, etc.; in galleries such as Kubik Gallery, Galeria Madragoa, No-no Gallery and Galeria Graça Brandão. She has held residencies at Espaço do Tempo, Gnration, Appleton Square, Fórum Dança, Residency Unlimited, Flux Factory, Artistes en Résidence, and others. The most recent projects include the organisation, in collaboration with David Revés, of the cycle of talks and podcast Amor e Morte with the participation of different guests from the Portuguese cultural scene; the book ISTO published by Edições Senhor Teste; the book Cores presented in an exhibition and performance format together with Filipa Nunes, Inês Brites and Maria João Petrucci at Segundas na Z curated by Laura Gama Martins, and at the Encontro de Artes Performativas do Ballet Contemporâneo do Norte and participation in the Screen Play event at the Center for Performance Research, organised by Catalina Alvarez.
