piano and birds for alberto carneiro

I received an invitation from Wrong Wrong Magazine to contribute with an essay for its twenty first issue, dedicated to the theme Gestures. I was thinking about what I was going to do and, since I was going to be at Alberto Carneiro Art Centre with the play «As árvores não têm pernas para andar», I thought that this place, filled with works by Alberto Carneiro, would be the ideal starting point for this essay. On the afternoon of 10 November, I explored the space, I made several experiments, and I stopped at the work «Sobre a água» (2007-2015). I filmed a performance in which, occasionally, I was percussing different parts of the various branches, with the idea of later associating sound to those movements. In my thoughts came the idea of associating also birdsong, and on the 13th of November I made a field recording in Vale de Poios (Pombal) where I recorded the songs of birds like the robin, the warbler, the great tit and the bunting. On the 14th November I recorded the piano part, based on the video already made and on that same day I experimented combining the three elements: the image, the birdsong and the piano sound. On the 15th November, with the aid of Rui Manuel Vieira in the edition, we finished this musical essay.
