Vítor Rua (n. 1961) began in the late 1970s with some melodic inventions that profoundly marked Portuguese art rock. In 1982, he founded with Jorge Lima Barreto, TELECTU, a group of improvised music and live electroacoustics. In his work with Telectu he met with major international figures of improvisation asserting himself as an experimentalist and polyartist. In 1987, in a willful act of self-study, he decisively considered the study of the notation of contemporary music and in this context evolved in a meteoric way. His work reflects a postmodern, preliminary, variegated work of empiricist refusal of cultural confinement, hinged on stylistic and ideoletal boundaries.
