the earth is beautiful and terrifying and so is love
In the beginning it wasn’t about screens. It was about drawing. It was about matter. Graphite compressed in fine layers on paper, until persistence and obsession turned into kinds of mirrors that reflected as much as they absorbed light. Thinking, through matter, through the screen, inscribed with a relation of proximity and obsession, of intimacy. Just as the screens I do not make, but use, as we all do, and in which we transform. They mediate everything: the gesture of reflecting and absorbing is made through and beyond them.
In the beginning it wasn’t about screens. It was about drawing the Earth. It was about matter. The Earth’s forces that from their innermost core project onto the surface new versions of the world, that accumulate and transform and create life. The volcano is how the Earth’s core speaks to the surface, through forces so powerful myths have told stories about their power since we, as a species, have been able to talk. The volcano builds worlds and in the same gesture destroys them.
This has also always been the promise, fascination and, simultaneously, the horror of technology. And also of screens.
