David Maranha was born in Figueira da Foz during the year of 1969. His work comprises music, architecture and sculpture. In 1986 started to develop his work as a musician both solo and with several bands having released 50 albums on European, American, Russian and Japanese labels. Forms in 1989, Osso Exótico, a Portuguese collective based in Lisbon, Portugal. Their music pushes existing boundaries and genre definitions with a focus on sustained sounds that developed over time into something closer to theatre. Their current formation are brothers André and David Maranha, Patrícia Machás, Francisco Tropa and Manuel Mota.
Has also collaborated with many musicians such as Richard Youngs, Manuel Mota, Chris Corsano ,Alex Zhang Hungtai (Dirty Beaches), Z’EV, Jean-Hervé Peron (Faust), Helena Espvall, Phill Niblock, Phil Minton, David Grubbs, Akio Suzuki, Will Guthrie, Andrea Belfi, Jochen Arbeit (einstürzende neubauten), Minit, David Thomas (Pere Ubu), Emmanuel Holterbach, Pete Simonelli, David Daniell, Margarida Garcia, Arnold Dreyblatt, Jacob Kirkegaard, Carla Bozulich, Simon James Phillips, Chris Cutler, BJ Nilsen, Werner Durand, Robert Rutman, Ben Frost, Helge Sten, etc. He has also been part of the following collaborative works: trio with Richard Youngs and Chris Corsano, trio with Alex Zhang Hungtai and Gabriel Ferrandini, duo with Z’EV, duo with Will Guthrie, Organ Eye with Patricia Machás and the Australians Torben Tilly and Jasmine Guffond, Bowline with Francesco Dillon on cello, Curia with Manuel Mota and Margarida Garcia Afonso Simões, Dru with Manuel Mota and Riccardo Wanke.
Finishes his studies in architecture in the year of 1993 at the Faculdade de Arquitectura da Universidade Técnica de Lisboa and has been developing work since then, creating a body of work that includes public buildings such as museums, schools, hospitals, senior residences and cemeteries. The main part of his architectural work was built in the region of Sintra. We can highlight the following buildings, Day-care Centre of Fação (1999), Primary School of Casal do Cotão (1999), Primary School and Kindergarten of Belas (2000), Pero Pinheiro Cemetery (2001), Retirement Home of Almada (2002), Tram Terminal of Ribeira de Sintra (2004), Science Museum of Sintra (2005), Wood Tower in Ribeira de Sintra (2006) and Massamá Hospital (2007).
Its first sculpture was presented in 1993 on Boqueirão da Praia da Galé, Lisbon and was titled Montre.
